Gurez in north Kashmir opens for foreign tourists

Bandipora, Feb 23: North Kashmir’s Gurez Valley in Bandipora district has been opened to foreign tourists this year to further promote tourism, Greater Kashmir has learnt.

The valley has long been off-limits to foreigners due to its proximity to the Line of Control (LoC).

Years ago, the government removed the requirement for entry passes for those living outside the valley.

The move, amid the calm along the borders and improved internet connectivity, has attracted thousands of tourists within the country to the valley since 2020.

Known for its high passes, lush green mountains, icy cold waters of the Kishanganga river, the Haba Khatoon spring, and the breathtaking Haba Khatoon peak, Gurez boasts a rich landscape filled with fragile flora and fauna.

The central government had previously restricted foreign tourists from visiting Gurez, awaiting approval for years. Numerous applications for entry from foreigners were pending at the Deputy Commissioner’s office and other offices in Srinagar.

Confirming the lifting of restrictions, MLA Gurez, Nazir Khan Gurezi, told Greater Kashmir, “Foreign tourists are now allowed to visit Gurez.”

However, Gurezi stated that foreign tourists would need to obtain special permission from the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Bandipora.

He added that there were no restrictions or caps on foreign arrivals and that anyone interested in exploring the valley could visit.

Gurezi predicted that the increased tourist arrivals “would boost Gurez’s economy”, enhance its tourism potential, and create more jobs for locals.

Meanwhile, with the influx of tourists, Gurez has been struggling with a garbage crisis. Last year, open dumping of waste raised concerns among locals who called on the administration to address the issue.

Due to limited staff and garbage collection vehicles, the problem persisted. To tackle it, the administration banned the pitching of tents by locals as well as tourists, and only approved campsites that were registered with the administration and equipped with proper garbage collection facilities.

When asked about the concerns, Gurezi said the issue would be addressed as plans for a garbage recycling plant in Gurez was underway.

“The work on the project will start this year,” Gurezi said, adding, “Funds have already been reserved for it.”

He expressed hope that the issue would be resolved once the project is completed. However, Gurezi ruled out any plans for a garbage segregation facility in the valley.
